Beware of These 10 Plants That Are Highly Toxic to Cats!

It’s important to keep these plants out of reach of cats and to be aware of any potential toxic plants in your home to prevent accidental ingestion and poisoning.

If you suspect your cat has ingested a toxic plant, contact your veterinarian immediately for guidance.
  1. Lilies

Highly toxic to cats, especially Easter lilies, tiger lilies, and Asiatic lilies. Ingesting even a small amount of any part of the plant can cause severe kidney damage and, if left untreated, may be fatal.

  2. Azaleas and Rhododendrons

These flowering shrubs contain toxins called grayanotoxins, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and even coma or death if ingested in large amounts.

  3. Dieffenbachia

Also known as dumb cane, this popular houseplant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting if chewed or ingested by cats.

  4. Sago Palm

All parts of the sago palm are toxic to cats, containing cycasin, a toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, liver failure, and potentially death if ingested.

  5. Philodendron

Similar to dieffenbachia, philodendron contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, swelling of the mouth and throat, drooling, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by cats.

  6. Aloe Vera

While aloe vera is often used for its medicinal properties in humans, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and tremors in cats if ingested.

  7. Marijuana

Although marijuana is becoming legalized in many places, it can be toxic to cats if ingested. Cats may experience lethargy, incoordination, vomiting, and even seizures if they consume it.

  8. Tulips and Hyacinths

These spring-blooming bulbs contain toxins called glycosides, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing and increased heart rate if ingested by cats.

  9. Ivy

English ivy and other types of ivy contain triterpenoid saponins, which can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, drooling, and diarrhea if ingested by cats.

  10. Daffodils

All parts of the daffodil plant, especially the bulbs, contain toxins called alkaloids, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, convulsions and cardiac arrhythmias if ingested by cats.

A little awareness today can prevent an emergency tomorrow — know what’s growing in your home.
