Why Lilies and Cats Don’t Mix: A Deadly Danger Every Cat Parent Should Know
At MEOW! At the Lake, we’re all about keeping your cats safe, happy, and healthy — not just when they’re in our care, but every day in your home. That’s why we want to shine a light on something many cat parents don’t realize: lilies are extremely poisonous to cats.
Lilies: Pretty, But Potentially Fatal
Lilies are one of the most popular flowers in homes and floral arrangements. Unfortunately, they are also one of the most dangerous plants for cats. Even a small exposure can lead to acute kidney failure and, in many cases, can be fatal if not treated quickly.
The most toxic lilies to cats include:
- Easter Lily
- Tiger Lily
- Day Lily
- Asiatic Lily
- Stargazer Lily
- Oriental Lily
How Much Is Too Much?
Shockingly, even the tiniest nibble of a lily leaf or licking pollen off their fur is enough to cause serious harm. Symptoms of lily poisoning can appear within hours and may include:
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Dehydration
- Increased urination, followed by lack of urination (a sign of kidney failure)
What You Can Do to Keep Your Cat Safe
- Keep lilies out of your home and garden. Don’t accept floral arrangements with lilies if you live with cats.
- Educate friends and family. Many well-meaning people send lilies as gifts without knowing the risk.
- Check labels and plant lists before buying any flowers or plants.
- If you hire a cat sitter (like us!), let them know if you have plants in the home so they can help monitor potential risks.
At MEOW! At the Lake, we love your cats like they’re our own. Part of loving them is helping you keep them safe. If you ever have questions about cat safety, health tips, or need someone trustworthy to care for your feline family, we’re here for you.
